Artist Spotlight: Sexbruise

The Appalachian Preservation Project is proud to present Jeremy Short as this week’s artist spotlight.

What are the backgrounds of each of the members?

John prefers the blurred background look in his zoom calls, Julie usually goes with the fake cafe, and Will and Stratton both like to use the ones that make it look like they are in space.

What is the inspiration behind the name Sexbruise?

Stratton thought of it when he was high and then booked us a show. And look at us now!

Why do you refer to yourselves as a satirical pop band?

Why do you refer to yourself as a human person? Because deep down, you know who you are and what you did. And you can never take it back, it’s forever. And also because we write silly pop songs.

What artists are currently inspiring the band?

There are a lot of great fiverr video artists right now that are doing really okay things for $15 or less. Check them out at fiverr.com

How would you describe the band's sound/style?

The bass makes a pretty low, thick, rumbly sound, and then you have the guitar which is kind of like “chicky chick” and sometimes “sqweeeee” - Then on top of that, you have human vocals that sing the words, along with some claps and smacks and synthesizers. Combine all of that with the sound of snacks being thrown into the air, and you pretty much have Sexbruise?

How do you hope your music impacts people?

We hope it shakes them to their core, and makes them reconsider the world as they knew it. Really, we aim to have fundamentally altered their reality.

What life experiences inform your music?

Life is funny and strange, and not enough music reflects that. Not everything is a heartbreak.

What is the importance of collaborating and engaging with fellow musicians?

No one in our band is engaged to another musician sadly. Also, what people don’t know is that 4 times a year there is a secret underground gathering of music industry insiders, where they hold a battle royal between all up and coming bands, and we are forced to fight to the death. The fact that we are still around speaks volumes.

Are you currently touring? Where can people find your show dates?

People can check for upcoming shows at sexbruise.com/#tour - see you out there!

Tell me about your new upcoming release!

We just released a brand new music video and single, “Ford Taurus”. The video is a literal interpretation about the difficulties one may encounter while dating a car. Will the parents of the Taurus accept John with open arms and be supportive if they decide to have car kids? I guess you’ll have to watch it to find out!
