Nineteen-year-old singer-songwriter Logan Halstead, will release his debut full-length album “Dark Black Coal” on May 5, 2023. Following the success of his song “Dark Black Coal” with almost six million views on YouTube he joined a number of other Appalachian artists who broke through the industry in the last few years.

Halstead wrote “Dark Black Coal” when he was only fifteen-years-old.

“Music has always been the biggest part of my life,” Halstead said. “I just try to make raw, authentic music. I don’t label myself as anything really, and I definitely can’t keep up with all the labels that have been slapped onto these new artists coming up.”

Recently Halstead released a single from his upcoming album, a minor-key string band arrangement of “Coal River.”

Also included on the album will be:

Good ol' Boys with Bad Names

The Flood (written by Cole Chaney)

Man's Gotta Eat

Dark Black Coal

Mountain Queen

Kentucky Sky

Far From Here

1952 Vincent Black Lightning (written by Richard Thompson)

Uneven Ground

Bluefoot

Halstead recorded “Dark Black Coal” at the Sound Emporium in Nashville alongside producer Lawrence Rothman. He was accompanied by Kristin Weber on fiddle, Dennis Crouch on bass, and Ethan Ballinger on mandolin. Halstead played guitar throughout the recording.

“It’s great to have a community built around music, people to let you know when you’re doing good, and the right people around you to let you know when you’re in the wrong,” Halstead said. “Team work makes the dream work.”

Halstead penned nine out of the 11 songs, with two of the songs being covers.

His original music highlights growing up in Appalachia, where severe poverty and the opioid epidemic deeply affect people.

“The people I want to impact the most are the kids like me who couldn’t see the brighter side of things growing up,” Halstead said. “There are better days!”

“I’ll be headed out on my album tour starting May 4th at the Basement in Nashville,” Halstead said. “You can find all the tour dates at LHalsteadmusic.com.”
